The vehicle identification number (VIN) is composed of 17 characters (digits and capital letters) that act as a unique identifier for the vehicle. A VIN displays the car's unique features, specifications and manufacturer.
The VIN can be found in a couple of places including on the car's registration label (1), on the compliance plate in the engine bay (2) or on the passenger side windshield (3), or on one of the door posts (where the door latches when it is closed) (4). See the image below:
If you’re in New South Wales and looking to buy a used car, you should always conduct a REVS Check (also known as a VIN Check) before making any decisions.
What does a REVS Check do? It tells you whether your pick is on the Register of Encumbered Vehicles and has money owing from the previous owner. If it does, the relevant creditor may be able to repossess it.
In NSW alone, a whopping 5.25 million vehicles have been registered for that year, accounting for a 2.8% increase in registration from the previous year. You certainly don’t want to inherit someone else’s debt along with your new car; the REVS Check NSW ensures you won’t.
To do your REVS Check in NSW with CarHistory.com.au all you need is your vehicle VIN or Chassis number, registration number and engine number. Unfortunately, there’s a lot more information you need before you can be really sure you’re not buying a lemon.
If a REVS Check can’t tell you everything you need to know, where else do you go to for information? Nearly 12% of Australians in the market for a used car ask their father for advice. Now we’re not saying you shouldn’t go to dear old dad, but 23% of those who ask someone else end up with a dud – so you could be putting yourself at risk.
CarHistory can help when your family’s advice or NSW REVS Check falls short. We’re the first and only website in Australia that stores data on used cars no matter what state or territory they’re in.
All you need to do is visit us online and enter your car’s vehicle identification number and perform a VIN Check.
