Where Can I Find the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number)?

The vehicle identification number (VIN) is composed of 17 characters (digits and capital letters) that act as a unique identifier for the vehicle. A VIN displays the car's unique features, specifications and manufacturer.

The VIN can be found in a couple of places including on the car's registration label (1), on the compliance plate in the engine bay (2) or on the passenger side windshield (3), or on one of the door posts (where the door latches when it is closed) (4). See the image below:

Look for the VIN in these other locations:

  • Insurance card/Insurance policy
  • Vehicle title and registration certificate

When you're getting ready to sell your car, there are a number of things you need to get into order before you can finally hand over the keys. Some steps can help you to maximise the value for which you can sell your beloved vehicle, whilst others may be required by the laws of your home state.

Here we take a look at what you should take into consideration when readying your car for sale.

Preparation is key

Fortunately, if you have been a cautious driver and had your vehicle regularly serviced, you'll be starting in a good place. One of the most basic steps you can take is to give your car a deep clean - enlist the help of a professional if need be.

Also, make sure to extend your cleaning to under the bonnet, as according to the National Roads and Motorists' Association (NRMA), a dirty engine could lead buyers to believe that you've not paid too much attention to your car's maintenance1.

"Deciding what's not worth fixing can be difficult but the age and the price of your car are a good guide. Generally avoid major repairs or repairs that might make a buyer suspicious," advises the NRMA1.

How a CarHistory report can help

You may be familiar with the idea of purchasing a CarHistory report as part of your own research when acquiring a used vehicle, but how can it help you to sell yours?

If you are selling your car privately and are reassuring any interested parties of the condition of your car, don't let them just take your word for it. All you need is your vehicle identification (VIN) to order your CarHistory report, which can lay out all the key facts of your car's history.

A CarHistory report can also give you a better idea of how to fairly price your car, as it includes a price comparison report that will show you what similar vehicles with the same mileage have sold for in the market.

Of course, before you sell your car, refer to your state's rules. For example, in Queensland you'll need a current safety certificate or certificate of inspection2, while in Victoria, it's a Certificate of Roadworthiness3.
