The best car games for road trips

Where Can I Find the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number)?

The vehicle identification number (VIN) is composed of 17 characters (digits and capital letters) that act as a unique identifier for the vehicle. A VIN displays the car's unique features, specifications and manufacturer.

The VIN can be found in a couple of places including on the car's registration label (1), on the compliance plate in the engine bay (2) or on the passenger side windshield (3), or on one of the door posts (where the door latches when it is closed) (4). See the image below:

Look for the VIN in these other locations:

  • Insurance card/Insurance policy
  • Vehicle title and registration certificate

We all love a road trip. Getting out with your friends and family, stopping off in places you'd never otherwise visit and inching closer to a new part of the country.

Australia is a big, beautiful and diverse place, so we're in a wonderful position to hit the road and explore some of it. That's not to say hours in the car is always the most fun, but you can certainly liven it up with a little creativity.

Here are some of the best road trip games.

1. Would you rather?

A simple concept, one person gives the group a choice: would they rather X or Y? The options can be as wild and wacky as you want.

For instance, would you rather have a robot arm or robot leg? Would you rather have the power to teleport but not know where you're going, or fly but you'd have to live the rest of your life with wings?

When you and your friends are thinking of the repercussions of your choices, as well as their own "would you rathers", time can seriously fly... or teleport.

Road trips can get stressful - make it fun for everyone with a few simple games.

2. The colour game

Need something to keep the kids entertained? The colour game involves everyone in the car choosing a hue. They then get a point for every vehicle they see of that colour.

If you really want to test out their maths skills, you can get them to choose another common colour and have them deduct a point every time they see that on the roads, too.

3. The swear jar

Another unusual game is the swear jar. It doesn't have to involve profanities, but everyday words that each person assigns themselves and cannot say.

It could be 'car', 'window', 'holiday', or literally any other word. The loser can forfeit anything, from their front-seat privileges, to buying the next round of in-car snacks - we'll let you figure that one out.

Keep it safe

Car games can keep your mind active whilst driving.

Remember, in-car games are not just fun on a road trip, they can keep you safe. By breaking the boredom of a long trek, you may feel more stimulated and awake as a driver.

Keep them fun, straightforward and simple, so as to not distract you from driving. Have a list of these road trip games to cycle through, as well as all the necessities needed for a road trip, whether a CarHistory report prior to buying a used-car, an adventurous soundtrack, or even a hard copy of a map.
